Although a few months have passed since TYPO3 4.5 LTS was released, the TYPO3 teams are working hard to get all kinds of new and exciting stuff out for us. The TYPO3.org relaunch project was one of the highlights of this spring but it seems that the core package is also getting some new features and not surprisingly some new minimum requirements as announced in the TYPO3 4.6 Alpha 1 release announcement.
Its great to see that after ensuring that people will have a product that will be usable for many years (TYPO3 4.5 LTS) now the focus is in making a modern and future proof product. So starting with this alpha release all future TYPO3 packages will have these minimum requirements:
- PHP 5.3: PHP 5.3.0 is quite widely available since almost two years. And with the latest versions it is actually usable in production. Also most web hosting companies are offering it now to users. So now, PHP 5.3.0 or above is now mandatory for TYPO3.
- Safe mode: While still being supported by PHP 5.3 (but now it is deprecated), safe mode is not supported by TYPO3 anymore.
- IE6: Finally! This ancient browser is not supported for the TYPO3 backend.
- ImageMagick: Support for older ImageMagick versions like v4 and v5 has been dropped.ImageMagick v6 or GraphicsMagick is now mandatory.
TYPO3 4.6 is scheduled to be released in October 2011. You can see the features and the roadmap here and you can download the first alpha package from here.
